Finding the Wind Direction

Captain Paul Sullivan

First Reef Sailing

Understanding wind direction is crucial for sailing.

Sailors use wind direction to determine their boat's orientation relative to the wind, also known as "points of sail" and to adjust sails accordingly to move through the water efficiently. They also use wind direction to navigate and plan their route, especially when sailing upwind (beating to windward).

Three Simple Ways to Determine Wind Direction

  1. Look at your wind indicator (sometimes called a windvane or windex) at the top of the mast. The arrow always points towards the wind direction.

  2. Look at any flags on your boat or onshore.

  3. Feel the wind on your face and use your hearing to sense when the wind is blowing past both ears.
